Faith & Shelter

Providing decent shelter is a central part of combating poverty, as inadequate housing is both a symptom and a cause of desperate poverty. Homelessness is an ultimate manifestation of the failures of social and economic systems to meet human needs and allow people to lead a life with dignity. Cramped and flimsy housing, overcrowded and unsanitary living space, and lack of security in occupying a home are also basic threats to a decent life. Best practice work on housing as an international development issue is available at major universities and international development organizations. But links with faith traditions and practices is a missing or weak link. This is a priority area for the Berkley Center.

Concerns about and approaches to housing have ancient origins and an important part of the history of evolution of housing policies involves both religious teaching and practice. The scriptures of virtually every faith tradition include rich teachings about welcoming strangers and offering a decent place to live. In the life of faith traditions also housing is often a focus. The passages highlighted on this page are only a sample.

Today, a wide array of programs of faith based organizations world-wide seek to overcome practical obstacles to lack of housing. There is, however, still no coherent "mapping" of their activities or assessment of aggregate impact. Supporting a better and deeper understanding of faith/shelter links is part of the Berkley Center's mandate and program. A partnership with Habitat for Humanity International is an important starting point. An exploratory December 4, 2006 meeting at the Berkley Center included leaders from Christian, Muslim and Jewish organizations. Habitat for Humanity also participated through Stephen Weir in the April 16 seminar on faith-based organization roles in development.

To date the modern aspects of housing challenges which involve an array of policy issues, have not been as systematically addressed by faith institutions. The role of decent shelter in the overall architecture of the Millennium Development Goals is less clear than for other goals and in effect centers on the challenges presented by slum communities especially in large cities. Faith communities are increasingly engaged in reflections on both urban life and housing, with the Anglican Church in the UK Faith in the City an important example.

An important next step is to gather examples of evolving practice in engaging faith communities in housing and shelter. A July meeting at the Berkley Center will discuss next steps.
